Conduct is often influenced by the manner in which the individual is dressed. Farmingdale School expects parents and students to recognize their responsibilities for acceptable dress and grooming as long as it is not disruptive to the educational program of the school or a violation of standards relating to health, safety, or decency. Parents or guardians should continually support proper guidance in the development and maintenance of student pride in good habits of grooming, personal hygiene and dress. The selection of clothing for daily attendance at school or at special school functions should be made with proper regard for modesty and good taste and should be neat and clean. The following items will not help us realize our objectives of proper dress and appearance. Therefore, they are considered INAPPROPRIATE: 1. Articles of clothing that cause excessive maintenance problems--cleats on boots, shoes that scratch floors, clothing with metal rivets that scratch furniture, hiking boots or other footwear with black soles that mar the floors. 2. Clothing or accessories that: a. Display vulgar or suggestive pictures b. Advertise alcohol or drugs c. Have suggestive lettering or profanity d. Are disrespectful to the American Flag e. Do not meet at the waist and leave a bare midriff f. Are too short, tight fitting or of such a nature as to be suggestive or revealing. 3. Hats and sweatband worn on the head in school buildings. 4. Warm-ups and sweat suits and shorts are permitted as seasonal dress. 5. Jackets and coats are not to be worn in classroom or hallways during school hours. 5. Clothing with holes will not be allowed if it is considered obscene. 6. Due to safety reasons students are not allowed to wear flip flops, open toed sandals or closed toe sandals without a back strap. 7. Parents will be contacted about their child if the school administrator feels that the clothing of the student violates the above rules or if the student's appearance causes a disturbance, a distraction, or is a safety hazard.
